The founder of the Holding and the inspiration behind its development is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Management Company – Viacheslav A. Zarenkov, Honoured Builder of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Economics, Professor, and author of over 170 patents. The President of the Holding is Dmitry V. Zarenkov, Honoured Builder of the Russian Federation, who started his career in the Holding in 1995 as an engineer of the 1st category in AOZT Electronstroy-1.

Residential construction has been the main specialization of LenSpetsSMU for over 20 years. As the Holding has developed, new directions of its operation have appeared and new subsidiaries have been set up. This has enabled the Holding to produce building materials and execute the construction of commercial and industrial projects. The company has also built up its construction equipment and machinery fleet. With time the Holding began to develop its operations in realty, financial activity and real estate maintenance and operation, and improvement of construction technologies.

Today the Holding has a firm position as a leader in the construction industry of the Northwest region. LenSpetsSMU’s share in residential real estate is 15-20% of the housing market. The Holding has completed and delivered over 70 residential and commercial buildings to date. The total area of the projects underway has surpassed 2.8mn sq m. During the period of explosive growth in the construction market, the Holding set a record for the amount of completed housing in the Northwest region – 413 thousand sq m in 2008. Currently, the Holding is one of the most successful enterprises in the real economy sector in Saint Petersburg and Russia in terms of technological, personnel, organizational and financial development. The Holding consists of over 30 companies employing more than 4,500 people overall.

With the shift of the construction market toward self-regulation, the demand for an organization including reliable developers and builders arose. The Saint Petersburg Builders Association, founded on the basis of the Association “Construction and Industrial Complex of the Northwest”, became the first self-regulating organization of its kind in the region.
